Arthritis Joint Pain Caused by Food

By Pamela Love

Foods That Cause Joint Pain

Arthritis might just be the end result of a food allergy, or maybe food allergies inflame your joint when you have arthritis, nobody knows. One thing for sure, you need to avoid certain foods if you want to live without joint pain and joint swelling. When I moved to the humidity of Florida from the desert, my joints instantly inflamed, so I started researching the subject. I know now why so many people with arthritis move to the desert of Arizona, Nevada and California.

Joint Paint Caused by Dairy Foods

Any type of milk product or derivatives of milk products will inflame arthritis or cause pain and swelling in the joints. Avoid milk, cheese, whey, and butter. When shopping, look at the product's ingredients label and also avoid any name that begins with "lact." Whether you notice it or not in the beginning, dairy is certainly playing a major part in the pain you are feeling in all of your joints. With so many food allergies being consumed, you are likely not noticing which food is causing the problem because you feel awful all of the time.

One trick to quickly identify a prepackaged food as dairy is to do what Jewish people do, look for the kosher symbol on the box. Kosher products will typically have a U with a circle around it or a K with a circle around it. If the product contains any dairy ingredient, then there will be a D or the work dairy next to the symbol. Rabbi are very strict about dairy in food. The Food and Drug Administration is not. They will allow up to 2% of a product's ingredients to be not listed on the food label.

Foods That are Known to Inflame the Joints with Arthritis

The basic list of foods to avoid when you have the joint pain and joint swelling of arthritis is: milk products, eggs, tomatoes, citrus fruits and palm oil. There are more, but the biggest problem is dairy, followed by tomatoes and citrus.

Avoiding Citrus When You Have Arthritis

Citric acid is in so many more products than you'd imagine. It is a very common flavoring and it is a very popular natural preservative. It is used in packaged fruits, pickling, in candies and soda pops. It is a pesky ingredient you'll see over and over on food labels.

Nightshade Plants and Arthritis

If you are not familiar with the nightshade family of plants, you might want to read up on it. When you have arthritis, foods in that family need to be avoided. The biggest offender for arthritis sufferers from the nightshade family is the tomato. The tomato is right up there with milk products for causing severe swelling and pain in the joints. Tomato is usually easy to spot on an ingredient label, but sometimes it is hiding in the word "broth."

Arthritis is starting to look like just a problem with multiple food allergies. Studies on this subject started in the 1980s and now we know many foods cause the joint pain and joint swelling that we call arthritis. By giving up diary, tomatoes and citrus, you'll be well on your way to a pain-free life. You will feel great after only a week.
