Making Healthy Native American Fry Bread

By Flora Vinson

After a long tradition of enjoying fry bread, modern lifestyle and science has thrown it into the list of foods to avoid because of its health risks. This nearly irresistible meal is now something families can only look at, but eating it often is never really an option anymore. It has a lot of calories, and has too much fat and oil. The health risks associated with eating it are enormous.

You could, however, make it much healthier by simply changing a few ingredients. The problem that existed before was that the ingredients used to make the food were unhealthy. It is no longer necessary, however, to simply forego this delicacy when you might as well enjoy it with a few adjustments.

For ingredients, switch normal oil and use canola oil instead. You can also use sugar substitute instead of normal sugar. The other normal ingredients are baking powder and a cup each of fat free milk, whole wheat flour and self raising flour. Start by mixing the flours, the milk, the sugar substitute and the baking powder in a large bowl.

Next, you place the dough in wax paper that you must have sprinkled with a bit of self raising flour beforehand. Continue to knead until its consistent enough. After that, you must leave it to sit for at least one hour.

You then need to start heating the canola oil in a pan. Pour at least one inch of it and heat it until ready. If you want to know its hot enough, then it will sizzle if you pinch some flour and sprinkle it lightly.

The final step is to divide your dough into eight equal pieces. Dip each portion into the oil and let it fry until its golden brown. Place the Fry Bread onto paper towels. It is ready for you and your family to enjoy.
