Which is best: Self-catering or Full Board?

By Alfie Davis

If you're still considering your holiday options, you might be wondering about some of the finer points of your stay. One thing that can get people tied up is the thought of whether they should pay for full board in advance, and potentially save money, or go self-catering for added freedom and a little bit of risk when it comes to finding the next meal. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

With self-catering you get more freedom to choose. That means you can set up at a location that feels like your own private home for a while, rather than have to fit your holiday around the demands of the routine of wherever you're staying. This means lying in as opposed to getting up punctually for breakfast, and exploring the location at your own pace. Self-catering also means you'll be rustling up your own food, so it gets you out into the community of the location and forces you to interact rather than being closeted in as an idle tourist.

On the other hand self-catering can bring with it further stresses. If you're in an unfamiliar place you might not be able to guarantee the quality of eating places on offer, and that means having to scout things out as soon as you get there, and spend time between meal times considering where you're going to go next. You want a holiday to really feel like a holiday, and a break from cooking and rooting around for food in shops can be just what some people need.

Really it comes down to where you're going. Full board can be restrictive if you're in a lovely location which has plenty of food outlets and restaurants to enjoy, but if you're in a location where food is expensive or hard to come by it makes sense to have your meals laid out for you. It also saves you money in most cases, as you effectively buy your meals in bulk.

So there you have it. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but remember to look into where you're going to make the most informed choice.
