Arguably, circuit training is the most effective exercise modality for fat loss. However, despite this fact, it's not for everybody.
In fact, circuit training can do more harm than good in some cases.
So here is when you shouldn't do circuit training:
1. If you have a partially repaired injury: Because circuits are so intense and hit your muscles from so many different angles, you are better off completely healing the injury first. You see, an injury is less likely to heal if you keep on bombarding it with circuits.
2. If you're just starting out: Unless you are genetically gifted it will be very hard for you to learn how to do circuits the first time around. It takes time to learn each exercise. And it takes even more time to learn how to coordinate them together.
3. If lifting the most weight is your goal: If you want to lift more weight then you have to lift the maximum amount of weight you can each workout. And circuits aren't conducive towards this type of training. Thus, if maximal loads are your primary goal don't do circuits.
4. If you have a huge muscle imbalance: It is possible for a well constructed circuit to address and fix the imbalance. However, never do a generic circuit if you have a big muscle imbalance. If you do, you could amplify the magnitude of the imbalance.
5. If you want to increase power: Increasing power involves doing exercises at very high speeds. Unfortunately, doing a circuit at very high speeds isn't very safe. You are better off focusing on one exercise at a time if you are trying to increase power.
6. If you hate doing them: Circuits aren't for everyone. In fact, if you strongly prefer a different type of exercise I strongly recommend that you do it. You see, you are not going to stick with something you do not like. And if you don't stick with it you won't get results.
