How Can You Afford to Prepare?

By Mark Lee

The option to 'bug out' or 'bug in' in a post SHTF scenario has caused many a headache among the prepping and survival community for years. Many people simply cannot decide which would be best for them. Family emergency preparedness is one topic that should be planned.

This is all very well and good, but these threads are started by people whom have ample cash to throw at the latest fan dangled piece of equipments. Whilst we on the other hand barely get a sniff of anything that even remotely feels affordable. Understanding this is the key to Family emergency preparedness.

The best survival situation rehearsal I know is - The power down

This is a great one to throw you into the deep end and really get an idea of what life would be like without power. You can make this as comfortable or as uncomfortable as you like. However I would recommend just using the supplies you have a not cheating...you won't be able too in a survival situation.

Take a piece of paper and write down for half an hour everything you can think of that could be a danger to your families survival. Below are some topics to get your started.

1. Immediate vicinity threats (power stations, rivers, roads & traffic, hurricanes, storms)

Place duct tape over all light switches, so that you cannot turn them on by mistake. This is one point you shouldn't overlook as you will automatically try to turn on a light in a dark room.

If you are in this situation you are very lucky, as many preppers cannot afford such luxuries and you have a CHOICE right here. Many people who live in densely populated areas opt for a bug out location that its stocked with supplies which would last 6-12 months in a survival situation.

Each person is assigned a method of light, be it torch, candle or oil lamp. This piece of equipment should be used sparingly as it will not last forever. The idea here is that each person gets used to looking after their own equipment and having some form of responsibility.

Length of time

The trouble with this is transporting said items to a bug out location. In this scenario it is always best to batten down the hatches and stay home. You know your local area better than anywhere and you can live for an extended period of time inside your home, by being discreet and making proper preparations.

In Summary

Buying in Bulk. This sounds like an obvious one but you wouldn't believe how many people look over this simple cost saving method. Sure it's cheaper to buy a can of beans here, a packet of spaghetti there, but in the long run it will cost you more.It is far more economical to buy in bulk at your local warehouse. Save up the cash if need be for a couple weeks and then go to the bulk item store. Just ensure you only buy items you enjoy eating on a regular basis as there is no point in a supplies store full of ramen if you can't stand it.
