Tips For Making An Ice Cream Sundae Bar

By Carmella Watts

When the sun is out and the weather is warm, kids like nothing better than a sundae, and they're ideal for kids' birthday parties. However, they need not be just for children. By setting up an ice cream sundae bar, everyone can get their fill of the dairy delight and by following a few simple steps, you can save a little money and time.

One of the best times to set up the bar is at the weekend, when you can unwind and not worry about working the next day. Some people hire out a company to set up everything for them, but if you have the time, and want to save money, doing it yourself is a great alternative. Plus, with the money that has been saved more cash is available to buy the products.

Although you don't always see this at professional stands, it is usually best to scoop the ice cream beforehand if doing the job yourself. Children can be notoriously messy, and, additionally, doing this saves time and makes it easier for your guests to make their own sundaes. No-one wants to have to wait in line while a kid struggles to carve out a ball from a dessert that is frozen solid.

For those wishing to scoop out the ice cream before the event, try and wait until the last moment to do this, say around 60 minutes before the event is due to commence. Scoop the dessert into large bowls and place it straight back in the freezer, taking it out a few minutes before the event starts.

Sundaes come with all sorts of yummy toppings, some of which will need to be kept hot throughout the day; toppings like hot fudge sauce and caramel sauce. One of the best ways to do this is to put the sauces in a small slow cooker. These will be the slow cookers that are normally used for keeping gravy and other sauces warm, but they work great with hot toppings. Make sure you stir up the sauce often, to keep it from burning or sticking to the bottom and to keep from getting a skin on the top.

It might not be a good idea to have a party with just one variety of ice cream or topping. Variety is deemed to be the spice of life and it works the same way for this. Buying a variety of ice creams in your local store will probably mean kids enjoy coming up for the frozen dessert more than once. Don't forget to cater for adults by making up topping with alcohol, brandy and chocolate being one suggestion.

If you want to go the extra mile then why not try baking some brownies and having guests build their sundaes on these. Waffles also work well, especially when they're fresh from the oven. Chocolate chip cookies are a big kids' favorite, as well as glazed doughnuts. Of course, if you feel like taking it easy then just buy the brownies and waffles in advance and heat them up as the guests won't ever know.

With a little effort your ice cream sundae bar can rival one made up by a professional. By doing a little preparation work in advance, you should not only save money but will have total control over all the produce on offer.
