A Unique 21st Birthday - Beach Style!!

By Eric Mitchell

Birthdays pop up and vanish, celebration of another year gone by. Personally, my birthday has just been another day. Although on a good note, sharing my birthday with Our Savior has meant that I didn't have to slave away on my birthday.

One year slips by and then the next. Right after moving to Fort Myers Florida, I realized my 21st birthday was coming up quickly. Dragging by, the month of December looked unusually slow. High hopes of having the fairy tale dream surrounding my birthday also stayed lethargic. As more people found out about the celebration, I just wasn't feeling the sensationalism.

As experienced before, actually my entire life, Xmas day should be a fantastic day for a birthday. In all reality, it is a real let down. It's a daunting task to convince mates to leave well coordinated and decorated family houses. Brothers and sisters that reside 1000 miles away are content with new beginnings of their own family holiday traditions. It does appear like the percentages are stacked against me.

The holiday was upon us and I took the precaution of requesting for the following days off work. It's my 21st birthday; I am going to need that recovery time. Living on Fort Myers Beach at the time, snow covered hills that I was acquainted with were replaced by oceanic views of specialist shops adorned in numerous Xmas themed lights. Comparatively new to the social drinking scene, I limited myself to the bars that I could only access within walking distant. Thus, there was no need or reason for the 22 passenger Ft Myers limo to take the crew around to the bars.

I bounced from location to location. Amazingly, bartenders were merciful about my sharing a birthday with Jesus Christ. As the tale continues, they just could not help pouring me an elixir or 2 on the house. During this time, I was forced to invite those I knew who had almost nothing to do for the remainder of the night to come over to my beach crib. Two in the morning was closing in. I was able to stumble gracefully thru the local spirits store and asked for the largest bottle of Jagermeister in stock. Coming back home and finding the love of my life waiting with one or two pals modified my dismal outlook. Perhaps in the subsequent year or thereabouts, I'll check into an express trip on the Key West Express for my party. Year on year, the one thing that still remains unchanged is the people who make great memories occur.
