How Potato Salad Was Started

By Johnray Cruzmann

Among my favorite things to feast upon is Potato Salad, ultimately Ribs and potato salad. On a wonderful evening in the summer season entertaining friends and family, a conversation arose about what sort of potato salad recipe is better and who desired which kind, etc. That got me curious about the beginnings of potato salad and the multiple variations that have been created since then.

I uncovered the fact that the potato was identified in South America by Spanish explorers who brought it back along with them to their native lands within the sixteenth century. Merchants and farmers ended up being the reason why this veggie became associated with Europe.

A good place to start on finding where the potato salad came from would be Germany, a country abundant in potato's and plenty of recipes to prepare them, its nearly sure to be one of the first to prepare the food. By way of the second half of the Nineteenth century America became familiar with potato salad probably by way of German immigrants.

Their are many variations of potato salad, European style is served warm and is also called German potato salad. This version will not contain any mayonnaise but will usually have vinegar, onions and bacon.

The American version of potato salad will have mayonnaise as opposed to the European or German version but will also contain many other ingredients depending on who is making the dish. Ingredients ranging from celery stalk, pickles, red peppers, and the list can go on and on, its a fun dish to make and my favorite because of the wide range of things that you can put into it and basically come up with your own favorite style.

Unquestionably the potato salad really is an everlasting classic, available at festivities, and social events. It has existed for a long time, and will, no doubt continue to draw in many to the family table looking forward for a great number of years. Having a recipe that constantly has modifications, it will be thrilling to discover what will appear next.
