By Ray Marsh

Many people are debating lately, whether coffee happens to be good or bad for your health. While many people believe that coffee must be bad for you, research shows drinking 1 or 2 cups of coffee a day could have very positive effects on your health. However, research also indicates that consuming too much coffee is bad for your health. It's thought that drinking any more than 3 or 4 cups of coffee each day could be considered excessive. This article will look at some of the effects drinking coffee can have on your own health.

For many people, the first noticeable effect of drinking coffee is an increase in short term memory. Something in the make-up of coffee beans has the ability to help people's memory retention. This is great news for students facing exams.

Studies also show that the students who drank moderate amounts of coffee scored higher on tests than those who did not. Other studies have shown an increase in cognitive memory among those over the age of 80. Coffee has also been directly linked to lower risks of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Drinking large amounts of coffee has also been proven to increase the amount of low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, in your body. High LDL levels are an indicator of high cholesterol, which is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease. With higher cholesterol comes a significantly greater risk of vascular disease, stroke, and heart attack. Researchers did find that coffee brewed using proper paper filters can reduce and even remove most of the harmful elements that increase cholesterol levels. Harmful components like cafestol and kahweol, which can only be found in coffee beans, actually bind to the paper in the filter rather than getting into the coffee. In other words, brewing coffee with a paper filter is a safer method than pressing or brewing with a plunger.

It has been proven that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee possess a slight laxative effect that has the ability to stop constipation. Due to this laxative effects, many think that coffee drinking and decrease the risk for colon cancer. But, people that are heavy coffee drinkers tend to have loose bowels. If this is the case, then drinking coffee in moderation will rectify this.

In conclusion, drinking coffee in moderation might be much better for you. But, those people that are into drinking a lot of coffee should take note that there are bad health effects that could rise out of taking in too much caffeine. Moderation is the main ingredient to achieving a healthy balance.
